John H. Chu

John H. Chu is the co-founding and managing partner of Chu, Ring & Hazel LLP, where he focuses on the representation of growing enterprises, venture capital transactions, and mergers and acquisitions. John began his legal career as an associate at a major Wall Street law firm active in takeovers and mergers and acquisitions. He followed this experience by starting up his own direct mail company. After that, and before forming Chu, Ring & Hazel LLP, he became associated with and was named partner of one of Boston's major law firms and in due course concentrated his activities in that firm's entrepreneurial services group. He and his partners, Jim Ring and Will Hazel, have also co-founded Fair Outcomes, Inc. (www.fairoutcomes.com), which provides an online embodiment of a patent pending escrow system that reduces the inefficiencies associated with bargaining and dispute resolution.

John has represented scores of private and public companies in connection with a range of legal matters, including founder and shareholder arrangements, employment agreements, equity financings, including seed round, private placements, venture capital financings, overseas offerings and initial public offerings, securities law compliance, acquisitions and divestitures, license agreements, development agreements, joint ventures and strategic corporate partnerships of various kinds. His current clients are business enterprises and individuals engaged in a variety of undertakings. Many are technology oriented - biotechnology, biomedical, internet, semiconductor, medical device, software and telecommunications - while others are involved in the development, manufacture and sale of more traditional products or services.

John graduated from the University of Chicago with a B.A. in Anthropology and he earned his J.D. at the Columbia University Law School. John began his legal career as an associate at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson and then McGarrahan & Heard (now part of Arent Fox LLP) both in New York City. He subsequently joined Bingham McCutchen LLP in Boston, where he was a partner in its business area from 1988 until co-founding Chu, Ring & Hazel LLP in 1995. John is married and has one daughter.

John is a member of several national and local bar organizations.  He currently serves as Chair of the Audit Committee of  the Boston Bar Association and is a former Treasurer and Council Member of that organization; he is also a trustee of the Boston Bar Foundation. He also serves as a director or advisory board member of several start-up companies and of Discovering Justice (www.discoveringjustice.org), and is a former member of the board of trustees of the Citi Performing Center (formerly The Wang Center).
